この作品の当初の構想は、それぞれに個性を持つ短い楽章の組曲だったが、第1楽章が完成する頃には、従来の3楽章構成の方がうまくいくことが明らかになった。冒頭の楽章はシンコペーションが多く、ほとんどラグタイムのような雰囲気を持っている。
