フランシス・プーランク（1899–1963）は、ほぼあらゆる音楽ジャンルに取り組み、陽気さや洒脱さ、自由奔放さと、憂い、優しさ、厳粛さが見事に調和した、いかにもフランスらしい作品群を残しました。
《チェロ・ソナタ》は、1940年に名チェリスト、ピエール・フルニエの依頼を受け、友人マルト・ボスレドンの自宅で構想が練られた作品です。情熱的で幻想的なピアノと、豊かな響きをもつチェロが見事に調和しています。
1949年5月18日、パリのサル・ガヴォーにおいて、ピエール・フルニエ（チェロ）、作曲者自身（ピアノ）によって初演されましたが、その時の評価は控えめなものでした。しかし、その後次第に高く評価されるようになり、今日では世界中のチェリストに愛される重要なレパートリーの一つとなっています。

Francis Poulenc (1899–1963) tackled nearly every musical genre and left a body of works that is typically French, in which gaiety, cheekiness and spontaneity rub shoulders with melancholy, ten­derness and seriousness. Sketched out at the home of his friend Marthe Bosredon in 1940, at the request of famed cellist Pierre Fournier, his Sonate for cello and piano matches the piano’s ardent flights of fancy with the rich textures of the cello. This work achieved only a mild success at its premiere at the Salle Gaveau in Paris on May 18, 1949, with Pierre Fournier on cello and the composer at the piano. However, as time went on, it found its place in the repertoire (and the hearts) of cellists everywhere.
